Cardiology Laboratory

Our Cardiology Laboratory is equipped to diagnose heart problems through the use of EKG-monitored stress tests, echocardiography and nuclear medicine stress tests. Cardiac testing is administered by a board-certified cardiologist and specially trained nurses.

The technology utilized at Kish Hospital, is the Vivid i, the world’s first high performing, portable cardiovascular ultrasound system. With portable equipment there are many options; the machine can be taken to a patient’s room for his or her convenience and the doctors can use advanced technology wherever they are using wireless connection or by burning a CD.

Procedures available at Kish Hospital:

• Echocardiogram Adult and Pediatric
• Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)

Interventional Radiology

Using fluoroscopy, CT, and ultrasound to guide procedures such as performing biopsies, draining fluids, inserting catheters, or dilating or stenting narrowed ducts or vessels, interventional radiology offers less risk, less pain and less recovery time with minimally invasive procedures compared to open surgery. Among numerous interventional radiologic procedures performed at Kish Hospital, many are cardiac related (examples below).

Peripheral Angiogram
These procedures are performed by radiologists, cardiologists and vascular surgeons. Depending on the exam ordered, contrast can be injected in the artery and or veins. X-rays are used to visualize the anatomy being assessed and to diagnose blockages. The physician gains access to the vessel by way of a needle which is then replaced with a guide wire and then a sheath which gives him or her catheter access. Arteriograms are usually done via the femoral artery. The catheters are then injected with contrast and the system in question is visualized with the help of x-ray. Balloons and stents may be used to help open blockages; sometimes coils are used in other types of studies. Physicians usually access the blocked vessel by putting a sheath (essentially a large IV) into the common femoral artery. Then long catheters are inserted through the sheath that snake through the vessels.

Vena Cava Filter
When a patient is producing blood clots, the physician may wish to insert a vena cava filter that will catch any clots going “upstream.” A little metal filter sits in the inferior vena cava, the vein that receives the blood from the lower limbs and the greater part of the pelvic and abdominal organs. The filter may be removable or permanent.

Pericardiocentesis
For patients with cardiac tamponade, pericardial fluid can be drained with a needle or catheter.

Neuroscience and Sleep Disorder Center

Studies show a high incidence of sleep apnea in people with heart disease and that sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure. Designed to help patients with insomnia, sleep apnea, sleepwalking, restless leg syndrome, and other sleep disorder, the center is a cozy, home-like suite that features advanced computerized equipment to monitor patients overnight.

The Neuroscience and Sleep Disorder Center at Kish Hospital conducts sleep studies to diagnose a variety of disorders in adults, and children age 3 and older. The studies are performed overnight using advanced, computerized equipment to monitor the brain as it transitions through the stages of sleep, and to measure the functions of the lungs, heart and other parts of the body.

Testing available at Kish Hospital includes:

• Polysomnography (PSG)
• Continuous and Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure titrations
• Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) for diagnosis of narcolepsy
• Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) to measure ability to stay awake and alert
